What now for how I support my child?
3. Give your child lots of opportunity for rehearsal so they can make
good decisions automatically.
This will mean they do not have to rely on their Executive Function skills at times when
feelings are high and the pre-frontal cortex is compromised.
In practice, this means spending time with your child rehearsing likely
scenarios – Prep4Best! E.g.
“You are with a group of friends. You have promised to get home by 7:00 p.m. When
you say you have to leave, they try to persuade you to stay and call you a chicken.
How would you like to respond? What would feel comfortable to say to them so you
keep to our agreement but also feel ok amongst your friends and do not lose face?
4. Help your child improve their Executive Function Skills – first help them learn
what they are. Notice times when they are stronger (Bright Spots) and use some of
our top tips in the Strength Based Approach to Executive Function Skills book to help
them improve.
