P. 6
The Building of the Brain
The front part of our brain (the pre-frontal cortex) is
sometimes known as the ‘Control Centre’ of our brain.
This is because it helps everything to run smoothly.
This control centre houses an important set of skills
called ‘Executive Function Skills’.
These skills help us to think ahead, focus attention,
control our impulses and stay on track.
This area of the brain is not fully developed
until we are around 25 years old!
That means it is much harder for children and young people than it is for adults to stay
on task, follow routines and manage big feelings.
In our ‘Shaping the Brain’ unit (Unit 3), we will find out why it is even harder for some
people to carry out every day tasks - through no fault of their own.
