Language Matters
Language is crucial – it is the difference between a child feeling supported and motivated to improve or
feeling disenfranchised and problems spiralling.
Language should be kind and supportive whilst keeping expectations high and being solution-focused:
We advocate the language of skills and needs:
▪ I noticed it was hard for you to stay calm and focused when I gave the writing out.
▪ What was going on for you? Which need was not met ok?
▪ I wonder what would help you find it easier to manage next time? Let’s work this out together.
