Key Messages: Brain Control
Executive Function Skills are critical to success in and outside of school.
They do not finish developing until around 25 years of age 1
Executive Function Skills are nearly always the issue when a child is
2
struggling.
Connections between the pre-frontal cortex (where Executive Function
skills develop) and other parts of the brain develop over time. 3
They are not as strong in children and young people
Some neurotypes are naturally weaker in some Executive Function Skills, and
4
stronger in other areas of cognition. This is just the way their brain works.
This means that when a young person has big feelings, it will be harder for
them to think rationally, act and speak deliberately and make good 5
decisions – however much they meant to keep their promises and do well
