Page 8 - What?! No Consequences?! A Neuroinclusive Approach to Follow-Up
P. 8
What about consequences?!
When one asks the average person on the street: explain the term ‘consequence’, most
people describe a punishment.
Humans have become convinced that making someone feel worse will help them to do
better. We don’t agree.
We do believe people should be held to account (perhaps we should say ‘helped to
account’!) through extra teaching and coaching (like you would maths).
We believe that simply making them feel bad will only exacerbate issues.
Protective measures may also need to be put into place.
Let’s get back to the original definition of consequence:
Origin
Late Middle English: via Old French from Latin consequentia, meaning ‘following closely’.
When a child is struggling, we need to pull them towards us and follow closely,
not push them away and make them feel bad.
