The key messages:
1. The 5Cs creates a framework for young people to understand and
communicate their needs.
Without such a structure, we are failing to give young people a voice (and the
chance to become positive self-advocates rather than developing strong
‘prickle habits’).
3. Helping children understand the neurobiology and missing skills behind their
behaviour helps to rid them of blame & shame. It also enables them to know
that things don’t have to be the same – we can work together to help them
feel and do better.
4. Using the language of the ‘we’ team enables young people to feel supported.
5. Keeping expectations high whilst also being empathic is crucial:
“It is understandable that this is difficult for you AND it is really important we
help you build the skills to do well.”
6. From Fixer to Coach: empowering young people to plan ways to feel and do
better helps them to feel a better sense of control and to feel more capable
(and secures long-term, sustainable change).
