Helping people feel in control in helpful ways
Ways to help someone fill their cup of control
1. Agree expectations with the person rather than telling them
‘rules’. This also helps to develop social cognition.
2. Let the person know your needs and what would be great for you
rather than ‘telling’ them what to do.
3. Give choices to the person as often as possible.
4. Discuss things that will be happening ahead of time.
5. Help to give certainty by using calendars, pictorial schedules,
social stories, previews and pre-visits.
6. Work out small steps towards a goal so they feel capable.
7. Make instructions short and clear and use pictures and diagrams
so the person feels certain about what is expected.
8. Help them learn ways to influence positively using our ‘Speak Up
4 Better’ tool.
