Sometimes adults can feel powerless too.
Are these familiar phrases?
1. Minimise / deny I’m sure they like you really. Don’t worry about it. There’s loads of other
people you could be friends with.
2. Shame / embarrass Please don’t tell me you’ve forgotten again?! You are such a Dosey Dora!
3. Threat If you don’t get on with, you won’t be playing football later.
4. Bribe If you are good all week then you’ll get that extra computer time.
5. Rescue / fix Don’t worry. I’ll have a word with those girls and tell them it was very unkind
and that they need to start including you.
6. Criticise You never do as you are told. Every day I say the same thing and you just
don’t learn. You promise time and time again and then let us down.
7. Push away / isolate Right. That’s it. I have had enough. Go to your room / Mrs Tamper’s room.
9. Preach/lecture This is what happens when you don’t listen. If you had listened properly in the
first place, you’d know what to do. You must concentrate or you’ll never improve.
10.Guilt trip What a shame. You have ruined it for everyone. Your Dad is going to be so
disappointed. I’m sure this is the last thing he needs.
