Support: Scoop, Divert, Substitute!
Scoop, divert, substitute is a useful strategy to help someone calm and
get back on track:
▪ We scoop the person towards us and help them feel supported (rather than
pushing them away by telling them to go and calm down somewhere).
▪ We divert them towards something which will help them to feel ok for the
moment.
▪ We help them to substitute any unhelpful ways of feeling good for more
helpful ones.
