Key Messages: Brain Needs

We all have physical, emotional and cognitive (learning) needs.

We divide physical needs into two sets: a) basic physical and b) sensory needs. 1

We divide emotional needs into two sets also:
2 a) those related to people (People Around Me needs) and b) needs related to

the things we are doing and places we are going (World Around Me needs).

There are many different physical and emotional needs – too many to hold in

our mind at one time. To create a structure simple enough for any age person 3

to think about their needs, we summarise them as our ‘5C Needs’.

4 We do not all have the same size needs: some people have bigger or smaller
needs than others. We call this our ‘Cups of Need’.

Knowing our needs gives us the best chance of meeting them well: it means we
can prepare ahead of time and let others know our needs. It also helps us to 5

work out the ‘why’ when things go wrong.
