Unit 1: Getting Started Answers
11. In the longer-term, the approach aims to build skills for the future – learning
skills, pro-social skills, a moral compass and emotional intelligence.
12. The key principles of the Empowerment Approach:
▪ understanding how the brain is built and shaped;
▪ the impact that stress chemicals and neural circuitry has on a person’s
ability to do well at home and school;
▪ our different types of needs;
▪ recognizing that when a person’s needs are met well, they do well;
▪ understanding concerning or unhelpful behaviour as unmet needs,
missing skills and signs of stress;
▪ recognizing the importance of relational safety and staying curious.
All these principles are as relevant to a newborn as they are to a 9 year old, 15
year old and indeed a 90 year old!
The programme itself is primarily designed for ages 3 to 18. Many of the
models, tools and strategies are just as suitable when working with adults.
