The Repair Stage
Types of Empathy
The act of repair needs the skills of empathy.
Empathy is a set of skills that has to be learnt. There are 3 types of
empathy involved in the skill
Some children will be better at these skills because of repair:
they have observed, experienced and been taught
them at home and within their community. ▪ Cognitive Empathy
Other children won’t have been so lucky, and their ▪ Emotional Empathy
skills will still be weak.
They may need extra help to catch up with these ▪ Compassionate Empathy
skills.
A child may have difficulties in
one or more of these skills.
Their skills will not magically
appear – they will need support
and practice to improve.
