    Great care has to be taken at this stage. Obviously you would not say:

  Example : ‘The bastard would go to prison and they would throw the key away.’
    On the other hand, you must not mislead anyone. The safe course is to say something

along the lines:
  Example : ‘I don’t know, Bill, but I don’t think telling the truth can make it any worse. Now
  why did all this start?’
    Fishing questions are a step away from admissions

Introductory statements – Phase A

THE OPTIONS

Your choice of opening depends on the strength of the existing evidence and the level of
certainty in the suspect’s guilt.

    You may merge or adapt the alternatives but there are a number of common factors which
are important (Figure 7.1).
