BACKGROUND
The tourist centre
The Ayres Rock is in the Uluru National Park on Central Australia, around 478km from Alice
Springs and is one of the country’s main tourist centres. Steeped in aboriginal mythology,
the sandstone outcrop is the largest monolith in the world and rises some 348 metres above
the surrounding plains and is 9 km around its base. There are many points of interest on
Ayres Rock including The Climb, Maggie’s Springs, the Kangaroo Trail, the Fertility Cave, the
Maternity Cave and the Brain.
