 What does "interrupted past" mean?

It means one action was happening, and another action

suddenly happened and stopped it.

Key words:-

 while → shows the long action

 when → shows the short action that

interrupts the long one

Example:-

 While I was swimming in the lake, a fish bit

my toe!
The swimming is the longer action.

The bite is the interruption
