Bridge PlazaGets OpeningCelebrationThe renovation and reconstruction o f B rooklyn%u2019 s Manhattan Bridge Plaza, near the Manhattan Bridge, which was damaged during the construction o f the BQE, is nearing completion o f a $.5 million public works project. Trees, sitting areas, and high-mast lighting have been added to the area, along with reconstructed masonry work and stairways.The plaza is expected to become an %u201c extended campus area%u2019 %u2019 for students o f the New York City Community College, directly across from it. Dean o f the administration, Luther Johnson, has pledged that the college will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance o f the park. The plaza will also serve local factory workers and area residents.The beautification project was funded by the federal local public works program and coordinated by the O ffice o f Development, the Downtown Brooklyn DevelopmenAssociation, the Dr. White Community Center and the Bridge Plaza %u201c Action 12%u201d Block Association, led by local resident Jerry Renzini.A ribbon-cutting ceremony to o fficially re-open the renovated bridge plaza at the Brooklyn entrance to the Manhattan Bridge at the Flatbush Avenue Extension and Concord Street is scheduled for Thursday, September 7, at 11 a.m. Guests invited include Governor Hugh Carey, Mayor Edward Koch, and City Council President Carol Bellamy.This restoration o f the bridge entranceway is the first in a series o f planned improvements which project coordinators hope will lead to the reopening o f the Manhattan Bridge pedestrian walkway.Boerum HillPeace CrusadeA nationwide Peace Crusade will begin at Our Lady o f Peace friary when a Portuguese statue blessed by the late Pope Paul VI will arrive in Boerum Hill for two days of prayer and celebration.Two days o f prayer and celebration will com m ence this Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27, with the arrival o f a Portuguese statue blessed by the late Paul VI at the Our Lady o f Peace friary.Paul VI blessed the statue on a 1967 visit to Portugal, and the statue represents %u201c Our Lady o f Fatima,%u201d a vision o f the Virgin Mary who appeared before three Portuguese children asking them to pray for peace. The statue will begin a Peace Crusade at Catholic churches throughout the country and on hand for the event will be R ev. C on stan tin e L una, G u a temalan bishop, as well as Brooklyn arch-bishop Francis M uguvero.Saturday's feast will begin at 5 p.m . with a short procession from Our Lady o f Peach Church Carroll Street near Fourth A venue, and on Sunday with a 2:30 devotion at the church.BQE Task ForceAgrees-ln PartThe Brooklyn Queens Expressway Task Force has finally reached a consensus that the reconstruction project should and will proceed to completion.Specifics on the rehabilitation o f the Summit Street pedestrian overpass, the exact placement o f traffic con trol agents, and the specific number o f police officers to be assigned at three fixed police posts are some o f the points that have con %u00adcerned South B rooklyn residentsand that remain to be worked out.Although %u201c some differences of opinion remain to be worked out%u201d between some residents of the affected communities and individual Task Force members about what Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden called %u201c peripheral%u201d issues, the general agreement reached includes the timetable prepared by the State Transportation Department.The project opens for bids on O ctober 19 and a construction contract will be awarded sometime in late November, according to the Transportation Department. Preparatory work will begin next spring, and the reconstruction itself, including a major detouring o f traffic, will start in June, 1979.Preparatory work will include relocating lights, building a temporary ramp, and converting an exit to an entrance at Rapelye Street. The Transportation Department emphasizes that two traffic lanes in each direction will be open during peak hours in the preparatory period.At the Task Force meeting in Borough President Golden%u2019s office on August 10, Transportation Department officials said that it is feasible to deck over the lower BQE for about 100 feet on either side o f Union Street.
