Surrounded by a sea of notes, folders and flyers, Joyce%u2019s phone was constantly ringing and three people were waiting to try to sign up as merchants in the massive celebration. Though they had missed the registration deadline, the waiting toy dealer, carpenter and jewelry merchant were willing to pay the double fee that is the penalty to late-comers, just to be a part of the monumental event..%u2018%u2018In addition to most of the attractions that we had last year we%u2019re getting a lot of new stuff this year,%u201d said Gibbs, a Boerum Hill resident and three-time director of the Atlantic Antic, now in its fourth year. %u201c Each year I tell myself, %u2018I%u2019m not going through this again next year,%u2019 but I%u2019ve grown a sort of passion for it.%u201dThe wall around the cheerful woman hangs heavy with posters, buttons, newsclippings and teeshirts from the past three Atlantic festivals. %u201c It%u2019s really very exciting to see the whole thing coming together. Once you%u2019ve worked in this office, or even just dropped by for a couple of minutes, you can%u2019t help but see the whole festival, or any street festival, through different eyes,%u201d commented Gibbs. She had just done a %u201cjuggling act%u201d with several registrants because she tries to %u201c plan everything so that no one display or attraction crowds or takes away from another.%u201d The placement of each participant %u201c is an essential deciding factor in the success of the Antic,%u201d and she arranges them as carefully as an architect designing a cathedral. %u201c Everything builds and accumulates for months,%u201d said Gibbs. %u201c At first things are very slow and sort of vague, then more people call, and more people join and the advertising starts and you can see it all coming together and bubbling inside, then finally it actually explodes -- all into that one day.%u201d That one day is, indeed, an explosion - a gigAntic one. -- J.W.Disco SpreadsLike WildfireDisco is a hot as wildfire and still spreading like one. And the Antic celebration just wouldn%u2019t be complete without some of that ever popular form ot music. So the Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Asociation (BACA) has lined up a selection, and, being the top rate organization that they are, they didn%u2019t just settle for commonplace performances.D.J.-ing the music will be some of the staff at BACA and they%u2019ve beeti working hard to get just %u201cthat type%u201d of music that will be perfect for the day. In addition to music they%u2019ll be having a contest, complete with prizes and a grand prize. The event will be emceed by WPIX%u2019s own Jim Curr. The contest is free to everyone and registration is between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. This will all be happening on the stage in front of the Ex-Lax building between Bond and Nevins.
