When the Dutch arrived the path was used by the farmers of New Utrecht to bring their goods to the markets at New Amsterdam. In the view at top, we see the path in 1776, on the morning o the Battle of Long Island; unchanged since the time of the Indians except for the construction of a fort.In 1867 (bottom) the same is seen just before it was to become a part of Prospect Park.
