In the 1867 lithograph at top, the Gowanus Baypresented a more pastoral setting. Used as a small harbor and oysterbed by local fishermen, the bay and canal were surrounded by farmsand estates. In the bottom illustration the canal is shown in 1776, just before theBattle of Long Island. Freek%u2019s Mill, in the foreground, stood near thejunction of Sackett and Nevins Streets. According to an ancient deed,it is known to have been in existence as early as 1661. Denton%u2019s orYellow Mill, at right, stood at the edge of a pond formed byconstructing a dam (between Third and Fourth Avenues) across theupper part of Gowanus Kill.On August 27,1776, a bridge across the pond and the two mills wereburned by retreating American Soldiers.
