(Articles or numbers count as word)Page 2, THE PHOENIX, October 19,1978Way Back WhenLess than a century ago, Flatbush Avenue was little more than a broaddirt road winding through the estates and farms of the descendents oforiginal Dutch settlers. In the 1880 photo, at top, we see Flatbush Ave. at Cortelyou Road, looking north. In the bottom photo, taken in 1884, the Flatbush Toll Gate isseen at its final location, near Fenimore St. The original Toll Gate waslocated at Flatbush & Hanson PI. (c. 1835). In 1842, it was moved to AtlanticAve. Later it was moved to Battle Pass, in Prospect Park.By 1855, the Gate was situated at its final location. The originalfranchise to maintain a plank road was held by the Brooklyn, Flatbush andJamaica Plank Road Co., which held it until 1855 when control wasassigned to the Flatbush Plank Road Co. In 1893 the company went out ofexistence and the collection of tolls was discontinued.
