NYPD ReportOPERATION ALERT: Due to the numerous demonstrations and related civil disorders in downtown Brooklyn, the 84th Precinct, together with the Downtown Brooklyn Development Association, is forming an Operation Alert. The Alert program will notify all storeowners, large or small, through a system of block captains about upcoming events or demonstrations downtown so that all storeowners are equally prepared. In the past, because of a lack of time and communication between police and merchants, only the major retailers were notified. Police say that the new block captain system will benefit all merchants.GAMBLING RING BROKEN:Nine arrests were made last week in connection with a suspected gambling ring at 435 Bergen Street. The arrests followed an investigation by police from the Brooklyn South Public Morals Division who also apprehended $77,000 and various types of guns on July 11 at 4:10 p.m. Arrested and charged with gambling promotion, possession of gambling records and possession of firearms were: N. Valdes, 41,435 Bergen St. and Hilda Rodriguez, 47, 437 Bergen St. Arrested and charged with promoting gambling and possession of gambling records were: Jose Perez, 34, Nine St. Marks St.; Arcadio Ferrer, 40, 261 Seaman Av.; Jose Mojica, 34, 296 12th St.; Pedro Rodriguez, 30, 429 Bergen St.; Quiteiro Perez, 42, 43 Fifth Av.; Miguel Morales, 65, 394 Bergen St.; Freddie Harris, 501468 Sutter Av.ALARM GOT HIM: An attempted burglary was thwarted when 72nd Precinct police answered a crime-in-progress call on July 11. Police arrested Alexander Rodriguez, 28, of 60th Street between Second and Third Avenues on burglary charges after he allegedly broke into an adjoining business of the Raw Commodities warehouse at 357 38th Street. Rodriguez allegedly broke through the wall and set off an alarm system which alerted police. Detective Thomas McComiskey and Officer Ed Langan made the arrest at 4 a.m.BORE A HOLE: Three males were arrested on burglary charges after allegedly entering a restaurant supply company by boring a hole in the roof. But owner Samuel Herbst was in the City Wide Supplies store at 20 Fourth Street on July 11. He drove to the 72ndPrecinct and brought Officers Charles Ingulli and Thomas Doyle back to the storefront. The three suspects, Terry Donnelly, 20, of 725 Fourth Av.; Ernesto Ortega, 18, 223 & 22d St.; and Samuel Rodriguez, 24, 378 Flatbush Ave. were arrested at 2:15 a.m.FACED THE MUSIC: A 25-yearold male was arrested for burglary and criminal possession of stolen property by members of Police Precinct 78%u2019s anti-crime patrol. Miguel DeJesus was apprehended by Officer Hoffman on July 11 at 5:15 p.m. after allegedly stealing a radio from Ann Doble, 21, of 686 President Street.SHOT DEAD: 18-year-old Willie Walker was shot down on the comer of Mill and Columbia Sts. on July 7 at 9:05 p.m. Walker was rushed to Long Island College Hospital minutes later, where he was pronounced dead on arrival from a gunshot wound in the chest. Following his investigation, Det. Charles Healy of the 11th Homicide Zone arrested Dennis Ghee, 18, the following day in the 68th Precinct, assisted by Housing Authority police. Ghee has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a dangerous weapon.BEATING THWARTED: A 40year-old man who allegedly threatened to beat his wife was arrested after she called police on July 12. 78th Precinct Police said they arrested Walter Guering, 321 Flatbush Avenue, after responding to a call at 12:15 a.m. by his wife Mary Draughn, 42. Draughn told police that Guering threatened to beat her with a stick after throwing her to the floor of their apartment. Guering was charged with assault, possession of a weapon and menacing.STOPPED BY MISTAKE: A city finance clerk carrying an estimated $300,000 in cash and receipts to a downtown bank thwarted a wouldbe thief. Leaving the municipal building at 210 Joralemon Street on 3:45 p.m. July 14, the clerk headed for the Court Street Chemical Bank and was accosted by Alfred Cusamano, 31, 170 Avenue C, who attempted to steal the bag. The clerk held on and as Cusamano fled towards the subway Police Officer Patrick Mullee, who had been escorting the clerk, took off after Cusamano. Mullee accidentally fired his drawn revolver and stopped Cusamano, who, hearing the shot, stopped and gave himself up.Kids Make Housing WorkCONTINUED...professional job.
