Esposito is charged with aiding the financing of Yaphank, Long Island%u2019s Parr Meadows Race Tract while he was a director of Mortgage Affliates Corporation and also with being a shareholder in an insurance firm that provided multi-million dollar coverage for the tract. State law bars political party leaders fromMany interviewed consider Anthony Genovese, 39th Assembly District leader, to be Esposito%u2019s heir-apparent since Genovese has been coordinator for both the Carey and Koch election campaigns here in Brooklyn and is said to be a close confidant of the county leader. Others argued that the party post should go to a political leader from some other part of Brooklyn besides Canarsie. (Both Esposito, and Deputy Borough President Ed Townes are among those mentioned as having an inside or outside chance at the county leadership.Although the position of county leader doesn%u2019t command a salary, considerable power comes with the job. Patronage in the courts, the Board of Elections and other municipal agencies comprises part of this power, and many county chairmen have been in the positioncould recall being made against other political leaders.%u201cI don%u2019t believe that there is very much to the charges; they%u2019ve been hanging around for some time,%u201d said Golden, adding that he's %u201c not interested%u201d in the leadership.%u201c Who can say what will happen? This civil action will probably take several years,%u201d said Gerges. %u201d As for being county leader, I don%u2019t know if I%u2019d want the job because I%u201cI don%u2019t think it%u2019s sewn up,%u201d said one Brooklyn district leader.\power.%u201dfinancial involvements in state race tracks. The largely unprecedented move by Lefkowitz is not likely to cause any immediate shake-up in Brooklyn Democratic circles since the attorney general%u2019s action is a civil court affair that will probably take several months, perhaps years, to resolve. Still, for some, hope springs eternal and although it is mid-November and a week after elections, previously planted seeds of political ambitions are sprouting.who has been county leader since 1969, and Genovese are from Canarsie%u2019s 39th).Ethnic concerns flavored the arguments of other politicos who felt that the next county leader should be a Jewish or minority representative. Borough President Howard Golden, Park Slope district leader Anthony Caracciolo, City Councilman Abraham Gerges, Bay Ridge district leader Frank Santoto use the job to enhance personal business ventures. The county leader and the district leaders who serve under him are the political rather than legislative arm of the party and their job is to get party candidates for the legislature, courts and executive offices elected.Golden downplayed the civil charges against Esposito which neither court nor political veteransenjoy the legislative direction in politics.%u201dPutting aside the outcome of the case, some Democratic district leaders said they %u201c could live with%u201d Genovese but don%u2019t see his election by district leaders as a foregone conclusion.%u201c I don%u2019t think it%u2019s sewn up,%u201d said one Brooklyn district leader. \feeling in Brooklyn is that the 39th A.D. has had more than its share ofpolitical power and that other leaders should be taken into consideration.%u201dSouth Brooklyn district leader Eileen Dugan doubted that the court case threatened Esposito%u2019s leadership.%u201c He will resign at his own good time,%u201d said Dugan. %u201cThe problem is that, like many other strongleaders, when he leaves he will not leave strong leadership behing him. I%u2019m not overly enthused with the candidates for his job. %u201d Enthusiasm over possible county leader candidates among those interviewed is being held in check out of respect for the still powerful Esposito. But several practice runs are probably in the planning.CONGREGATION BAITH ISRAEL ANSHEIEMES%u2018The Kane Street Synagogue%u2019Founded 1856 Conservative Howard D. Gorin, Rabbi 236 Kane St. btwn.
