Juan Mitchell is tough and can score inside, but he%u2019s only 6-5. Alton Bird is a first caliber playmaker. But the Lions will be killed off the boards, unless sophomore Greg Smith, the team%u2019s tallest man at 6-7 plays over his freshman stats. Easy early-season opposition should prevent last year%u2019s 2-8 start, but Penn should still edge Columbia for the Ivy title. MANHATTAN! The Jaspers have a new gymnasium and a new coach, former player Brian Mahoney, who replaces city game fixture Jack Powers. Powers moved up to an administrative position but left behind a first rate recruiting effort that will give Mahoney a running start as a rookie coach. JoJo Walters (18.1 per game) leads a talented backcourt that is joined by high-scoring Brinton Huggins from Newark and John Leonard, who led his high school team to a state championship. The front court has height, in 6-9 bruisers Mike Bruno and Karl Leuchau, and some untested talent in junior college prospects Ronald Scott and Vinnie Harris. Everybody forgets Manhattan at the beginning of the season, but they always manage a few surprises before the season%u2019s end. FORDHAM: Tom Penders took Dud Tongal, a seven-footer from Senegal with him when he left Columbia, but the word is that Tongal isn%u2019t ready for the Senegalese All Stars, never mind serious college competition. So. T.K. Tripucka, 6-8 and rugged, will play center. Tripucka would be one hell of a forward with a seven footer next to him, but he%u2019ll find some big men tough to play. If Tongal develops, perhaps the days of Digger Phelps will finally be forgotten. But Penders probably won%u2019t be able to turn around the Fordham situation this year. Coach Rober Gaeckler almost got the player to make the difference, David Taylor who averaged 30.5 points and 19 rebounds for Long Beach High last year. But Taylor must sit out a year because of a recruiting violation, so Gaeckler will watch Henry Hollingsworth (22.7 per game) fling jumpers and hope freshmen forwards Vinnie Ross and Aaron Howard grab enough misses and play enough defense to keep the Dutchmen dose. The four other gunners from last season are back, so Gaeckler has to hope Ron sad Howard don%u2019t mind seeing the bail intermittently. A dangerous team, here, especially if Ross and Howard are as good as their recruiting dance card indicated.ST. FRANCISr Okay, Brooklyn fans. The Terriers were ripped off last year when they weren%u2019t asked to the regional playoffs despite their excellent 16-9 record against some tough opposition. To match that record, Lou Rossini has his talented Latin Connection returning, including mix-it-up center Manny Figueroa. Nestor Cora, who was drafted on the eighth round by the N.B.A. Bullets, passed up the hardship route to come back, and Alex Vega brings back his 18 plus scoring average. The Connection is the team%u2019s offense, at least until December, when a couple of transfers join the team. One will be Kevin Starke, a tough guard out of Stevenson High in the Bronx, who is transferring from Centerary. The other is a mystery guard that Rossini can%u2019t name just yet. Get those scorers the ball, and St. Francis won%u2019t be overlooked this year.WAGNER: Two games gone, and a big victory already. The Seahawks may not do it every night out, but they have some talent and, for a change, most of it is healthy. Crippling injuries sidelined the team%u2019s leading scorers and rebounders last season. Jamie Ciampaglio, a record setter as a freshman, returns from a season lost to a knee injury. Earl Lewis, a 6-5 rebounder, will try to retrieve a form lost to torn ankle ligaments last year. But the development of subs Steve Johnson (19 a game as Ciampaglio%u2019s replacement: and Henry Dillard (10 assists per game), plus the addition of 6-7 Bones Thompkins, a transfer from Northeastern, in January, should make Wagner a good bet to improve on last season%u2019s 7-19 record, despite an unusually tough schedule.LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY: TheBlackbirds will be playing at the old Brooklyn Paramount, and by midseason they%u2019ll be glad they don%u2019t use the old vaudeville hook any more, because this act doesn%u2019t look too promising. Coach Pete Lizzo is counting on three newcomers, two of them transfers and one, Ruben McCoy, a hot recruit from the talent-rich Philadelphia public schools. John Utendahl, who is coming from Kent State, should help 6-9 John Nelson Bailey with the boards. Bailey blocked 85 shots last season, which for you math majors out there, figures to better than three a game. Besides 6-3 guard Steven Lewis, there isn%u2019t much else. Lets hope Lizzo can avoid the distinction of coaching the first 4-20 Blackbirds.Studio Holiday SaleDec. 15,16,17WBAI Crafts Fair or By Appointment atthe StudioPage 26, THE PHOENIX, November 30,1978 %u2022i ' * %u2019 ' *' * * * %u2022 ' 1 %u2022 %u2022 ? * 111 ! 1
