PHOENIXLook Up, Look Up!A Saturday Walk Down FultonBY LYNNE GRIFOAs an art student at New York University, I am constantlybeing urged by my professors to become more observant, toopen my eyes and not just look, but actually see, what is beforeme. And so, as I sit on a subway train or walk along the street Iam forever searching about me for information I may havemissed before. This has led me to some very interestingdiscoveries. For instance, it is absolutely fascinating to observehow many different types of architecture exists all around us inthe local areas. Because our Brooklyn neighborhoods havebeen spared the rampant redevelopment of Manhattan, wehave been left a legacy of artistic, ornate, and often verybeautiful examples of 19th Century building design anddecoration.Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Park Slopeare the areas that have received most of the attention, and allof us have been delighted by the artistic and historicalsignificance of the buildings in these neighborhoods. Butchances are that you have never really taken note of thesurprisingly handsome design of a number of buildings in theDowntown area. The architecture of these structures, is,unfortunately, often obscured by heavy coats of dark paint ordistracting signs and so it is easy to pass them by without asecond glance.I spent last Saturday morning taking photos along Fulton St.while many a puzzled shopper stopped by me to look up andtry to discover what I could be interested in at the top ofAbraham & Straus and Martin%u2019s department stores. Includedwith the photos on this page are brief descriptions of the styleof each edifice, date, and the names of the architectsresponsible for the designs. Anything look familiar? If not, thenI say look up, look up! There%u2019s a lot you may be missing. 466 FULTON ST.
