PHOENIX, Page NineNo Group Has Special%u00bb m g-mum ii KgjffiwDiscoveryDear Mr. Editor:For the first time, and I have lived on the Heights a long time, picked up a copy of your paper%u2014it is one of the best for reporting what goes on in Brooklyn%u2014hope it is on the Newsstands%u2014and I will find out when it comes out.I was particularly interested in the article on Mrs. Everson%u2014 whom I have known for a long time%u2014I too have worked on a few, very compared to hers, of the charitable organizations. At present, among my many, are the Brooklyn Hospital. I%u2019m on the Executive Auxiliary Board and we do a great deal of work%u2014which you will hear about from time to time%u2014 for it is the oldest volunteer hospital in the City, and we are very proud of it.Sincerely,Claire Burgoyne Monroe PlaceBoycottTo the Editor:In a recent edition of the Phoenix, I was pleased to see on page 3 your story on the meat boycott which showed a picture of my store, Public Market, 146 Seventh Avenue.I closed the meat market for one week in support of the strike by housewives protesting high meat prices. I have to pay higher wholesale prices, and die spiral has to stop somewhere. We are all victims.Trade Board PrexyReviews His TermFollowing is the final report ofLouis Lewis, who has beenpresident of the Brooklyn HeightsBoard of Trade for the past twoyears. I am not running for re-election because I do not believe that any one person should entrench himself in die position of organization leadership for too long a period. I have served to the best of my ability for the past two terms, and now I feel that someone else could and should be more advantageous to us all.I will remain as Chairman of Membership and member of the executive board. If certified as a Scofflaw, the State Department of Motor Vehicles will withhold your registration renewal when your current registration expires, until all outstanding parking fines and penalties are paid.Scofflaws will be mailed aTo the Editor:Following is a letter that I sentrecently to the Editor of the NewYork Post, as an Open Letter toPost Columnist Pete Hamill. SinceMr. Hamill is a resident of ParkSlope, I thought local readerswould find it of particular interest.Dear Mr. Hamill:Your mentor, Murray Kempton, was fond of giving his mind a rest when he was a New York Post columnist. A forerunner of the tough-as-nails pragmatic school (Hamill, Breslin, Flaherty, et al), Kempton delighted in titilating his liberal audience with praise for the presumed %u201c devils.%u201d Typical examples would be Carmine De Sapio or Jimmy Hoffa, with such key words as %u201cclass,%u201d %u201cdignity%u201d and %u201ccourage%u201d used to give rise to reverse liberal knee-jerkism. Since many of the Post%u2019s profiles are about Jews, Blacks, and Puerto Ricans (traced back to whatever generation or marriage necessary to find the connection), the profiles praising liberal nemeses were often Irish, Italian or %u201cEthnic.%u201dWhile Kempton gave his mind a rest, his pen rarely showed exhaustion. Unfortunately, yours recently has. While I have no quarrel with Al Blumenthal%u2019s overall credentials, your recent hatchet job in his support does him no service. Your article, though ostensibly about the new Democratic Coalition convention, once again brought forth your predilections. We tired liberals are tired of your sleeping hand. A few quotes and comments . . . %u201cBadillo, in fact, had come to represent the Old Liberalism, with all its myopia and narrowness.%u201dDoes Badillo represent myopiaand narrowness, or is he myopic and narrow? How clever! Did he %u201ccome to represent%u201d meaning go to the convention with those views or did he represent in your mind views you think he has, which you don%u2019t hold? Does Badillo%u2019s consistent opposition to %u201cCommunity Control%u201d of schools and consistent opposition to Municipal Union extortion and sloth convey the Old Liberalism?%u201cIn one Brooklyn Club, he said that he would not waste any time campaigning among the Irish, or the Italians. You know, the Irish and the Italians: racists, rightwingers, blah, blah, blah.%u201dPure drivel, Pete. Which club? Why imply Badillo is %u201c antiethnic?%u201d These rem arks, in various versions, have been printed in several places. I believe that people wish Badillo and his tired Old Liberal supporters, past and present, were New Racists (i.e. people who don%u2019t automatically swoon at the word %u2014 Longshoreman). Perhaps they do say things that are politicallystupid, but are you getting ready to denounce Biaggi for not spending a great deal of his campaign inthe benefits of energetic spirit of youth, and the experience of age, a very strong combination, I believe. I have had two very happy years as your president. I have had the cooperation and the friendship of the most wonderful group of people, colleagues and members of the Board. My strength in leadership was made possible by their support and ideas. They are great, and I love them all.The residents of Brooklyn Heights have also been wonderful and very cooperative. I must thank all the groups and organizations Who have helped %u2014 the local newspaper which gave us all the needed publicity ; the 84th Pet., the Dept, of Sanitation, the Park Dept., the Dept, of Commerce, the Downtown Development Assn. They all responded to our needs. Thanks to the many City officials, appointed or elected, they have worked with us and for us.Thanks to all of them, thanks t : all of you for having given me this trust.LOUIS LOW1SPresident,Brooklyn Heights Board of Trade%u201cDeferred Registration Renewal Notice,%u201d which states the reason for the deferral and informs the individual that he may clear up his parking debts and receive his registration at the Parking Violations Bureau office at 44 Court Street, Brooklyn. The easiest way to avoid becoming a Scofflaw is to pay the fine or plead the ticket at a hearing WITHIN SEVEN DAYS. If you delay, late penalties are added to the original fine amount.Late penalties are computed as follows: Paid 1 to 7 days after ticket issued: No penalty. Original fine only. Paid 8 to 30 days after ticket issued: $5 penalty added to original fine. Paid 31 to 74 days after ticket issued: $15 penalty added to original fine. Paid 75 or more days after ticket issued: $25 penalty added to original fine.Good WorkTo the Editor:I want to express my appreciation for your article, recently published in The Phoenix, about this corporation and the work we are doing in and for the community. We will continue to supply youwith news items and, please, keep up the good work you are doing for the people of South Brooklyn.Cordially yours,THELMA MARTIN, Executive Director South Brooklyn Community Anti-Poverty CorporationMoveTo the Editor:I have long believed and continue to believe that it would be in the best interests of both the Long Island College Hospital and the Cobble Hill community if the Hospital could be persuaded to move to a more centrally located site and closer to major public transportation.Recently there has been much confusion about whether or not this was also the position of the Community Planning Committee for LICH (CPC). To my knowledge, it is not, and never has been, the position of CPC that the Hospital should be moved from its present location. Perhaps you forgot some recent local Brooklyn examples %u2014 Pete Eikenberry and Al Lowenstein buried their chances to defeat your culture hero, John Rooney, when their vanity prodded them to respond to siren Greenpoint.%u201c Blumenthal worked closely with the regular Democrats under the leadership of Stanley Steingut.%u201d Oh, wow. Leadership. There must be another word. Painting Blumenthal with the brush of Steingut leadership is like cleaning up the Gowanus Canal with James Mangano%u2019s good intentions.%u201cMario Biaggi .... the only one of the Regulars with the courage to go before the NDC on Saturday.%u201d Courage. Here we go again. If Meade Esposito had Candidate%u2019s Night at a large public forum of regulars, which reformer would not have the courage to go? It is not courage to have political sense and do easy things.%u201cMario Cuomo .... is the best .appeals lawyer in the city.%u201d I have no reason to believe Mario Cuomo is not a good lawyer, but %u201cthe best?%u201d What are your standards and against whom are you comparing him?The point of all this, Pete, is consistency and toughness. If you believed that Hubert Humphrey was a %u201cWar Criminal,%u201d surely John Rooney is no less. It is milktoast soft thinking to believe that the guys in the bars wouia, on balance, vote for Jerry Kretchmer, and it is even more soupy to say they will. There was a group of liberals who believed (or so stated) that Blacks had a special wisdom, God-given, that made them morally superior and knowing Absurd. Now we hear that zipper jackets, callous hands, and scuffed shoes give credibility, honesty, decency, and all that other magic crap. Nonsense.Let us begin to change this town for the good by recognizing that no group has any special virtue on the basis of birth or occupation. We tired New York liberals have worked tirelessly for causes which would not necessarily benefit us at all. Help us undo our errors, but don%u2019t undercut our potential effectiveness with mythology.Very truly yours,Ben Tenzer Henry StreetBROOKLYNCONSERVATORYOF MUSIC58 Seventh Ave,at Lincoln PlaceMA 2-3300Chartered by Board of RegentsTHm iPrivate lessons for everyone in Piano, Voice and all Instruments.
