The outside facade does not suggest authentic Spanish architecture, but the food inside was definitely authentic Castilian cuisine and worth the trip to Atlantic Ave.We walked thru the bar and were seated in the restaurant section by a formally dressed waiter who proved to be very helpful, particularly to the novices in our group. One side of the menu is in Spanish; luckily, the other side is in English. Assorted bread with butter was served while we marveled over the choices. There were two sausage dishes offered, but most of the appetizers are of the seafood variety. We chose two appetizers for the five of us %u2014 mussels in garlic sauce and Spanish sausage. We were not disappointed with quantity or taste of either. The next time I go to J&E I want to tryeither the stewed octopus or the fried squid. For dinner, we finally decided to get paella for four since our waiter insisted that it would be more than sufficient for the five of us. The food is prepared after the order is taken which means a bit of a wait, but the end result is well worth the few extra minutes. We were served an excellent dry white wine and a tossed salad before the paella arrived. The paella was superb, well seasoned rice with chunks of chicken, shrimp, clams & mussels in abundance.I passed up dessert due to overcrowding in my middle but my friends thoroughly enjoyed the guava shells and cheese, one of the several desserts offered on the menu.Prices at J&E are moderate and the food should please even the most sophisticated of palates. J & E Restaurant is located at 121 Atlantic Ave., corner of Henry Street, and is open seven days a week from 11 am to 11 pm.
