Around two o%u2019clock, when the crowds were forming for the march across the Bridge from Manhattan, a scattering of people on the Brooklyn side were standing under umbrellas, or in line for the improvised ferry service across the river, or at one of the food stalls. There was a definite mood of anticipation in spite of the elements. The glow showed through the mist when the Brooklyn crowds were joined by a flock of people who made the trip across the Bridge in the roadway, which was closed to traffic from 2-4 p.m. tomark the occasion. Mayor Lindsay led the group, together with Brooklyn Borough President Sebastian (Sam) Leone. A fireboat floated in the middle of the East River for about a half-hour, shooting plumes of water in the air, to add to the festive spirit.Earlier, at ceremonies at City Hall, Mayor Lindsay presented the City%u2019s Diamond Jubilee medaLlion to John Dooley, former bridge director in the City Transportation Administration, who before he retired was responsible for maintenance on the Brooklyn Bridge. On Friday, before the weekend festivities, the South Street Seaport announced that the ferry service provided over the weekend was a preview of regular service it intended to institute between Pier 16 on the Manhattan side of the East River and the site of the old Fulton Ferry slip on the Brooklyn side. The last ferry service on this route was suspended in 1926, but Museum officials in their announcement said that because of traffic snarls on the bridge and overcrowding of the subways at rush hour, it believed that such a service could be economically viable. The weekend ferry service was provided not by a ferry boat, but by the old city fireboat, the Wilkes. The service used the city%u2019s fireboat station, which is nbw in the process of being discontinued. The proposed new ferry service expects to use this pier.1v m ti'M f fk M lttK li ... ....
