Only in the latter did hisskill waver, in a miscalculation inbalance between the chorus andthe orchestra during the openingsections. The performance of the interesting Hindemith work hadspecial significance for Foss, sincehe was the piano soloist in its firstconcert performance in Boston in1944.Listening to the Philharmoniaduring this afternoon concert andglancing around the audience leftthis writer with the unhappy impression that this orchestra ismuch too unloved and too unappreciated. There were too manyempty seats for a concert of thisquality. Sunday afternoon at theBrooklyn Academy %u2014 no fear ofmuggers, no difficulties withtransportation %u2014 should draw outthe audience. But the house was farfrom full. It%u2019s a crime. In any other city, the Philharmonia and what it has becomeunder the Foss baton would receivenational acclaim. The sometimesbedraggled group of pick-upmusicians that kept the Philharmonia going through the Sixties, has become a first-rate orchestra, doing new, innovative things to andfor music.
