Careers centerNow Open forPark Slope AreaWhat does a librarian do all day? How does a teenager, who might be interested in pursuing library science as a career, discover the answer to that practical question?A \te%u2019\\ \serv ice, has opened and begun to serve Park Slope. According to Jade Uhrich, the director, the center seeks to answer the practical questions and concerns teenagers have as they begin to work the various career alternatives that are open to them. The new center seeks to provide exposure to various occupations and training centers for junior and senior high school students.The new program will work with neighborhood schools and community youth organizations already in existence, in an attempt to mr'\the service available to as many teenagers as possible.Uhrich, a Park Slope resident, is experienced in designing innovattonal educational programs, both in the community and within the school system. %u201c We have two basic goals,%u201d he explained. %u201c First, the center seeks to work in conjunction with and lend assistance to the many career guidance efforts already functioning in the community. Second, it will attempt to generate new programs and ideas for exposing junior and senior high school students to career opportunities, so that they will be better able to select the education appropriate to their needs.\The Career Exploration Center is part of Project Reach Youth, an ecumenically-sponsored communiUhrichtv youth program that has been in existence for six years. Project Reach Youth (PRY) has served the Park Slope area in the past with tutoring program and a recreation program.%u201c This program adds another desperately needed dimension to our community,%u201d noted the Rev. Thomas E. Anderson, chairman of the PRY Board of Directors.%u201c It also marks a major addition to the Project Reach Youth program. Above all, it represents a way in which churches, working together, can establish a vital community service.%u201dThe Career Exploration Center will work closely with Child and Youth Development Services, an umbrella organization for Park Slope youth agencies, the office of the new program is at 415-21 7th Street, Brooklyn 11215.Future Uncertain For Post Office BldgThe Victorian-era Brooklyn | General Post Office in Cadman Plaza, an official New York City | landmark since 1966, faces an j uncertain future according to a government announcement last week-but that future does not include demolition. %u201c It will be either extensively renovated, converted to other uses, or sold,%u201d according to William Bolger, Northeast area director of the United States Postal Service.A decision on the future of the Brooklyn facility, the tenth largest in the country, will not be reached until later this summer, Bolger said. He added there are no plans for demolition. %u201c If we decide to build a new borough post office, the present building would be offered first to other federal agencies, then to the state, to the city and finally to the private sector.Trio to Preform Women's WorksThe New' York Lyric Arts, based in Park Slope, will give a unique recital of music all by women composers at First Presbyterian Church, 124 Henry Street, on Sunday May 19, beginning at 7 p.m.The Trio is an all women%u2019s group. Wendy Brennan, cellist, studied at the Paris Conservatoire. She has given a solo recital at the Carnegie Recital Hall and is currently with the American Symphony. Mary Freeman Blankstein is violinist. She studied at theJuilliard School with Edouard Dethier. She was Concert Master of the American Symphony under Stokowski, and is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Gena Raps, pianist, gained her Masters Degree at Juilliard and studied with Arthur Balsam.
