He isClive Lythgoe, a British-born concertpianist whose 30-year professional careerhas included performances with many ofthe major orchestras of England, the U.S.and Europe.Lythgoe comes to Roosa after a ten-yearstint as an Artist Teacher, Dean of theFaculty, and Head of the Main School at theCleveland Music School Settlement inCleveland, Ohio. That post was Lythgoe%u2019sfirst break with a full-time concert careerand he hasn%u2019t regretted it, he says. %u201cI did itin order to grow,%u201d he explains. %u201cI didn%u2019twant to lose sight of life in a whirl of jetplanes. And I wanted to pass on to otherswhat had been passed on to me by greatmusicians like Dame Myra Hess,%u201d withwhom Lythgoe studied in England. Two ofLythgoe%u2019s Cleveland students now commuteto Brooklyn for monthly lessons.The new Roosa director made his NewYork debut in 1973 at Carnegie Hall, andlater that year played a warmly receivedsolo recital in Town Hall. He has been achampion of American music for the last 20years, a commitment that was strengthenedduring the U.S. Bicentennial celebrationwhen he played a series of concerts acrossthe country, one of which was a five-hourWashington%u2019s Birthday marathon. He hasmade several recordings of American andother works; one album won the BritishBroadcast Company%u2019s %u201cRecord of theYear%u201d award.%u201cI%u2019ve become passionate about musicaleducation,%u201d Lythgoe says, %u201cand the community music school movement. I%u2019veClive Lythgoealways been a musical evangelist.%u201d Lythgoesays he is particularly excited aboutRoosa%u2019s outreach programs, which bringthe music school%u2019s professional faculty intoa number of downtown Brooklyn publicschools, including IS 293 in Cobble Hill andseveral elementary schools.Plans for Roosa under its new director include several new programs to supplementthe school%u2019s curriculum of private andgroup lessons for children and adults. Theschool will move into Suzuki Methodteaching, first on piano and then on other instruments; an expanded faculty concertseries will showcase the performingabilities of the school%u2019s faculty members.
