Story And Calendar P.21With a cold wind whipping down Court St. and the sounds of the Salvation Army sidewalk bells ringing in the background, some 20 people marched outside Borough President Howard Golden%u2019s office at 16 Court St. on Dec. 4, calling for permanent housing for the homeless. The group circled in front of the building for two hours chanting %u201c House the Rich, Not the Poor,%u201d while police stood at the entrance to the building. The demonstrators were part of the ATURA Coalition, a group that is seeking to stop the development of the Atlantic Terminal Area on 22 acres of land on the edge of Fort Greene.Park Slope Assemblyman James Brennan was one of those at the demonstration and he called on Golden and Mayor Ed Koch to return the campaign contributions they accepted from the developer of the project. The project was unanimously approved by the Board of Estimate onContinued on Page 9 (Phoenix/Koch Photos)For 20 Years Between PokerAnd Premieres, BACA ThrivesBY D A V ID L X . LA S K IN%u201c Asking what BACA means is like asking how you love your wife,%u201d exclaims Ted Gunn, director of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation%u2019s Center for Art and Culture. The intimacy of that remark mirrored the spirit of the occasion, a reception at the restuarant One Main on December 1 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Brooklyn Arts and Culture Association (BACA). Unlike the more formal gala celebration held in September and peopled with business leaders and government officials, this party was for the Brooklyn arts community and others wedded to BACA throughout the years. If there%u2019s anyone who embodies and exudes that spirit, it%u2019s BACA%u2019s founder and executive director Charlene Victor. As the party wound down and guests began to leave, she soft-shoed over by the elegant piano, crooning %u201c I can%u2019t give you anything but love, baby.%u201d Voice by voice, stragglers fell under the song%u2019s spell, joining in for a rousing final chorus.Truth is, this crowd has given each other and Brooklyn a lot more than love, but it%u2019s the love and support that%u2019s allowed all the rest to happen. Andplanting the seed, as usual, is Victor. Another maxim of Gunn%u2019s drives the metaphor of this sing-along home, %u201c We have the gas, and Charlene is the spark.%u201dAs a love of people, of the arts and of Brooklyn, Victor has served as midwife to the cultural renaissance that has helped bring the borough back to life. This night the fruits of her labor, along with her fellow Johnny Appleseeds, sipped champagne punch, nibbled on pke and basked in the artistic recognition mid community that has been hard fought and long coming.%u201c Looking at all the people who have become something because of BACA, it makes me ay , it%u2019s so exciting,%u201d Victor says. %u201c I remember years ago, a young girl came to us %u2014 she was a runaway, with nowhere to go, didn%u2019t care what she did %u2014 she just came to us because it was an open door. Well, I asked her if she liked kids, and she did, so I asked her to do kids workshops, and she turned out to be great. She was cvemuany hiicu as oui wuikshup leader, then went back to school for some photography courses. Now she%u2019s a famous photographer. And that, sweetheart, is what BACAContinued on Page 24
