Baltic Street HousesLet Their Light ShineBY LiZ KOCHBlinking lights and a wreath adorn the door of one of the Park Slope Village houses on Baltic Street, a sign of hominess for this new row of homes. On Dec. 17, further down the street in the playground of P.S. 133, members of the Fifth Avenue Committee, the 600 Baltic Street Block Association and the new Park Slope Village residents added more blinking lights to the neighborhood as they lighted a small tree in honor of the season and the new residents. The tree lighting was a joint celebration. Last November, the first residents began to move into the 44 houses that were constructed on Baltic St. and Butler Sts. and sponsored by the Fifth Avenue Committee. As part of the same development project, the new Key Food Supermarket on Fifth Avenue was constructed and P.S. 133 underwentrehabilitation. The houses, which each contain two apartments as well as one occupied by the owner, sold for $137,000.Now, all the houses are sold and occupied and although problems have surfaced in the past with charges of shoddv workmanshin.residents who attended the Dec. 17 Christmas tree celebration expressed satisfaction with their new homes and neighborhood. Councilmember Abe Gerges who attended the %u201cHome For the Holidays Celebration%u201d held inside the school after the tree lighting, praised the groups involved in the project for their work in combatting the homeless problem.%u201cTonight there are 13,000 children homeless in the City. The work done by the Fifth Avenue Committee means there is one childAtlantic Avenue Lights Their Tree For HomelessFor children, much of the holiday spirit is embodied in the sparkling lights of the Christmas tree, and on Dec. 17 the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation lights its first tree on Atlantic and Third Avenues to a chorus of children lustily belting out Christmas carols. The children, however, were not the only ones joining their voices in song. Borough President Howard Golden and City Councilmember Abe Gerges were on hand to join in on the renditions of %u201cJingle Bells%u201d and %u201cWe Wish You a Merry Christmas.%u201d Thechildren%u2019s chorus was part of the Montessori and after school program at the YWCA across the street.Gerges, who earlier this year was appointed as chairman of the Select Committee on the Homeless, asked that the children remember the 13,000 homeless children in New York City during the holiday season. Shirley %u201cJoe%u201d Payne, president of the Atlantic Avenue LDC, promised that the tree lighting ceremony would become an annual tradition for Atlantic Avenue. %u2014 L.K.less on the street,%u201d Gerges told the crowd of some 100 grade school children and 40 adults that attended the ceremony. Aetna was one of the major financial backers of the project.Resident Frank Gilmore attended the party with both positive and less positive words for the development. Buying a new home, he said, had given him his share of problems with repairs necessary and delays on promises to finish work.He added however, surveying the roomful of children, %u201cIt%u2019s definitely worth it though.
