E d it o r ia l sBest Wishes For PeaceAnd Joy A t This HolidayTime And ThroughoutAll O f1987FromThe Folks A t The Phoenix%Reagan Conned People%u201cWhat a tangled web we weave when first we start to deceive.%u201d Ronald Reagan did an inimitable job conning the American people about his loyalty and patriotism to his country. He began his presidency by violating the U.S. Constitution in order to collect an illegal pension as ex-Govemor of the state of California. When the millions he wanted for the Contras was denied by Congress, a devious plan was set into motion to use the freedom of the hostages as a %u201csmoke screen.%u201dThe alleged hostage release payment was only a ruse in order to furnish financial aid and arm s to the Contras.Ronald Reagan has brought the U.S. in disrepute all over the world. Our credibility has been severely damaged.Impeachment is the only logical solution to prove to the world that: %u201cWe the people do not condone nor sanction Ronald Reagan%u2019s unethical and illegal actions.%u201d %u2014 Bernice M. Butler, Pacific Street.Protest %u2018Amerika%u2019In February, TV viewers of ABC will see %u201cAmerika,%u201d a fantasy documentary of the United States under Soviet occupation, enforced by United Nation troops. What will be the effect on public opinion of twelve hours viewing of murder, violence, brutality committed on us? In this nuclearage, we need cooperation, detente, improved relations, not promotion of mindless hatred. To protest, contact Alfred Schneider, V.P., Capital City-ABC, 1130 Avenue of the Americas, NYC 10019; 212 887-7777. - Marion Kronhelm, Chairwoman, Flatbush SANE.Remember The LonelyAt this happy season we look forward to sharing the delights of an abundant holiday table with family, friends and neighbors.Yet in every neighborhood of our city, there are frail, elderly people, homebound and alone, who cannot look forward to this joy at holiday time.Government funds make it possible for elderly shut-ins to receive five hot, nutritious meals a week but cannot be stretched to include weekend, holiday and emergency meals.Citymeals-on-Wheels is working to fill that gap. Only contributions to Citymeals-onWheels, a public/private, voluntary partnership sponsored by the New York City Department for the Aging, can provide homedelivered meals to thousands of homebound elderly who would otherwise go without.Every dollar donated goes directly for meals. Through allocations made to them by the Department for the Aging, more than 150 voluntary agencies are able to prepare and deliver the food in all five boroughs. This Christmas and Chanukah older New Yorkers in your neighborhood will be depending upon Citymeals-on-Wheels to brighten a lonely day.Your readers can make holidays %u2014 and every weekend throughout the year %u2014 a time of caring and sharing by giving a gift of hot, wholesome meals to the homebound elderly.Tax deductible contributions may be made payable to the Fund for Aging Services and sent to Citymeals-on-Wheels, Department M-l, 280 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10007. %u2014 Janet S. Exciting programs, however, are no good if the public does not know about them. The Phoenix%u2019s reporting has helped spread the word and we%u2019re grateful.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I think it%u2019s going to be a good one for all Brooklyn. %u2014 John L. Hopkins, Public Relations Officer, Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St.Review Is PerceptiveThank you for a perceptive and textually accurate review of %u201cChaos in Order%u201d (Phoenix, Section 2, Nov. 20 %u201cBACA Downtown Finds Order in Chaos on Fringe%u201d ). Happy Holidays. %u2014 Craig Gholson, W. 37th St., NYC.Credibility DevestatedWhen President Reagan secretly shipped arm s to the Ayatollah, he already knew the Iranians had ordered the bombings which killed 300 U.S. Marines in Lebanon. In words, the President had stated of terrorists, %u201cWe cannot reward their grisly deeds.%u201d In deeds, he and his key players (Admiral Poindexter, Colonel North, etc.) rewarded the Ayatollah with arms.Such reward devastated our credibility. So did the illegal use of profits from this dirty Iran deal for other terrorists %u2014 the contras %u2014 trying to overthrow the Nicaraguan government. Like the Iran arm s shipments themselves, the diversioin of profits constituted knowing support of terrorists. In 1984, when legislation had been introduced in congress to bar U.S. funds %u201cfor planning, directing, executing or supporting acts of terrorism against Nicaragua,%u201d Reagan supporters in congress defeated it.Support for terrorists can only bring grief to Americans. The contras can kill civilians, but it is widely known they cannot win. Financing the contras only sets the stage for U.S. troops and another Vietnam. Already, U.S. pilots and advisers were unlawfully involved in military actions less than 20 miles from the Nicaraguan border.Th.'v s why the whole secret Iran-contraarms u ol is so dangerous for Americans. We must let our congressmen know we oppose further aid to terrorists, be they contras or ayatollahs. The future of the U.S. demands full disclosure and prosecution of those guilty of the Iran scandal %u2014 from the President on down. %u2014 Alice Gordon, Surf AvenuePann 38 THE PHOENIX December 25, 1986
