Every hom eowner had to have a bucket made of heavy leather and marked w ith the owner%u2019s in itials. When a fire broke out the fire com pany was made up of all the tow n%u2019s residents. As soon as an alarm was rung everyone took his bucket and set up tw o lines from the fire to a well or pond. Filled buckets went up one line and the em pty ones down the other to ensure a constant supply of water to the fire. By 1785 Brooklyn had its first fire engine (see picture) which had tw o handles worked by men at both sides to work the clum sy pump. The eng ine%u2019s water supply, though, still had to rely on the double lanes of the fire buckets. After the fire, a fire warden saw to it that all leather buckets were returned to their owners who kept them by their front doors %u2014From %u201c Home Life in Colonial Days%u201d by Alice Morse Earle, 1898,reprinted by the Berkshire TravellerPress.c S %u00bb d U p F r o n tM a il V o u r f i d o r D e liv e r It T o : T h e P H 0 6 N IX , 3 9 5 A tla n tic A v e n u e , B ro o k ly n , N .V . 11217 D e a d lin e : T u e s d a y , 5 p .m .
