USPS No. 44650In the late 1880%u2019s Gravesend had three race tracks to boast; the Coney Island Jockey Club, the Prospect Park Ground and Race Course and the Brighton Beach Race Course, (pictured above). The Brighton track was opened in 1879 and was located between Ocean Parkway, Coney Island Avenue, Sheepshead Bay Road and Sea Breeze Avenue on the north and south. The track and grandstand were rebuilt in 1897 when the track%u2019s builder, William A. Engeman died and his son, William Jr. took over management. On August 2, 1908, Henri Farman, a bicyle-automobile racer who made the first circular flight in Europe three years after the Wright Brothers first circle, flew for a third of a mile in thirty seconds down the track. The track closed for horse races in 1912 and had a few years of automobile races and airplane flights before it closed for good.
