In 1891 the StateLegislature passed a law authorizing the City of Brooklyn to erect the building ata cost not to exceed $300,000 which then would be leased for $1 a year to thenewly created Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. In 1893 plans and designsfor a museum building were obtained by the Mayor and Park Commissionerthrough an architectural competition. The next year the first stone was laid and on June 2 1897 the Mueum openedits doors. Additional State legislation provided for the new City of New York toissue bonds for another $600,000 to add sections to the Museum to bring it to itspresent size.
