BAM Gets Grossman DanceBY JUDITH STUARTDanny Grossman and his dancers will be performing in the LePercq Space at the Brooklyn Academy of Music beginning Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. The program will run through the weekend, ending with a matinee on Sunday.Although Danny Grossman was born in California and worked ihere and in New York most of his professional life, his company is now based in Toronto, Canada. He is most known for his work as a soloist in the Paul Taylor Dance Company, where his wonderful energy and outstanding technical proficiency won him consistently fine critical notices. The program (his week will include, %u201c Higher,%u201d a dance set to music by Ray Charles. This has come to be known as Grossman%u2019s signature piece. %u201c Curious Schools of Theatrical Dance,\program. He will be premiering %u201cTatum vs. Cecil and Monk or Flury and Beebop Meet Sidestep and The Muse,%u201d a work set to the music of Art Tatum, Cecil Taylor and Thelonius Monk.Grossman%u2019s lively work is often set to modern jazz, a form of music he has always been attracted to. While this is a first for BAM dancegoers, they can nevertheless be assured that there will he good dance and a fair share of humor attached to this program.Hicks Opens Group ShowThe secret to sticking around in the bustling art world, in and amongst the changing mods, fads and tastes, is holding together and expanding carefully but boldly: sort of a cross between conserving your resources and playing your hand. The Henry Hicks Gallery is walking that thin line right now, with a new group show celebrating a grant from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, which will give the gallery the last boost into the bold financial black. Sixteen of the gallery%u2019s members will roll out their works for the full month of December in a pastiche of abstracts, figuratives, pattern painting, acrylic, watercolors, pastels, graphics, and sculpture, celebrating the past the keeping an eye out for what's up ahead. The Henry Hicks Gallery will run a group show, December7-30. Fridays, 3-6pm, weekends, noon-6pm at 93 AtlanticAvenue. Call 522-3693 for further information.Double Bill Is BreathlessBY JULINDA LEWIS WILLIAMSThe Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) shared the bill with the Capoeiras of Bahia November 30 at NYCCC%u2019s Klitgord Auditorium. Both groups managed to leave the audience stunned and breathless.Gene Hill Sagan's choreography for %u201c La Valse%u201d is grandiose in keeping with the music by Sibelius and Ravel to in which it is danced. Debora Chase, Deborah Manning and David St. Charles exemplify the exuberant spirit and technical expertise of this young company. Pennsylvania%u2019s contribution to the modern dance world strikes a triumphant note in a season more remarkable for its quantity than for its quality. The capoeira, a Brazilian martial art disguised as a dance, was developed by Angolan slaves. Today it is a popular Brazilian art/sport. Jelom Vieira%u2019s choreographed %u201c Capoeira%u201d combines the best of dance, acrobatics, and gymnastics in a graceful flow of movement. Timothy Moe and partner demonstrated the skill required in executing a series of lightning fast turns punctuated with deadly kicks.C h r i s t m a s B a z z a a rPark Slope Methodist Church6th Ave. & 8th St.Sat., Dec. 8 -1 0 A.M . - 4 P.M .--------------H andm ade-----------------Hats%u00bbMittens%u00bbClothing%u00abGiftsQrnaments%u00abBaked Goods and JelliesPlants-White ElephantsBreakfast & Lunch Available(Aconcert artists guildTHE HEIGHTS PLAYERS INCPresentsT h e a tre for C h ild re n2 6 W illo w P la c eTHE SNOW QUEENDirected by Gloria CohenDec. 8-9,15-16,22-23 at 2 p.m. admission: $1.50 children $2.00 adults For reservations call 237-2752M n rin 9.
