This panoramic artists' view of Coney will give you an idea why. Hundreds of rides, shows, exhibits, games, restaurants and hotels drew hundreds of thousands from all over the world, but it was New York%u2019s playground. The tower at left belonged to Steeplechase Park, which became the most famous amusement area in the world when %u201c Dreamland%u201d burned to the ground in 1911. The Dreamland Tower is just right of center. Luna Park, the Iron Pier Pavillion, plus dozens of smaller exhibits%u2014some recreating the latest catastrophies%u2014fire, earquakes and floods%u2014on a giant scale. Each day, dozens of side-wheel excursion steamers from all ver the city docked at huge cast-iron sheds projecting into the Atlantic. Everything shown here is gone. Perhaps Casinos will induce someone to give us another Dreamland.
