                                    mKids At Picnic HouseThe Prospect Park Picnic House is the setting for a series of children%u2019s performances this summer. There will be shows every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, l-3pm, from July 5 through August 9.Sponsored by the Prospect Park Administrator%u2019s Office in cooperation with Con Edison, the series of drama, folk music, vaudeville and more is produced by Elizabeth Reese. The first weekend features %u201cSafari East,%u201d a multi-cultural folk concert by Vishnu Wood and his company on July 5, and a Penny Bridge Players production of %u201cSweet Land of Liberty%u201d on July 6.The summer continues with the Beau Jest Theater Company presenting mime and vaudeville on July 12 and Rainbow Road Dancers on July 13. To reach the Picnic House, enter the park at Prospect Park West and 3rd St. Admission is $2 and free for under five. For other Prospect Park activities, call 788-0055.Vaudeville Is BackA large variety of interesting performances are included in this summer%u2019s %u201cNew Vaudeville Nights,%u201d a series featuring performers and ensembles with a sense of vaudeville in their work. The shows are at %u201cSideshows by the Seashore,%u201d the non-profit Museum/Theatre sponsored by Coney Island, USA, Inc. They cost $5 each.Every Sunday night at 8pm a new show can be seen, ranging from full company productions to one-man bands and shows.The July 6th performance features Punch and Judy, and %u201cThe Funny Oldtime Revival Meeting with Brother Ron Litke & Friends%u201d will be shown on July 13.%u201cSideshows by the Seashore%u201d is located on the Coney Island Boardwalk at West 12th Street. For reservations or further information call 372-5159.Liberty In PapierArtist and sculptor Thomas Hewitt will conduct a papier mache workshop for kids at the Brooklyn Children%u2019s Museum on July 3. Using his seven-foot papier mache model of the Statue of Liberty as a model, HewittP B %u2122 fIXwill demonstrate techniques of papier mache.The museum will join in the celebration of liberty Weekend %u201986 with a musical presentation entitled %u201cThe Lady of the Harbor,%u201d performed by the Don Quijote Experimental Theatre on July 5 and 6, at 1:30 and 3pm each day. The show includes an animated Lady liberty, played by Amy Brentano, who will share the significance of the Statue of Liberty with the children, who will join her on stage at points during the performance to assist her in telling the tale of immigrants to the United States. The Children%u2019s Museum is at 145 Brooklyn Avenue. Admission is by donation, and all performances are free with admission. For further information, call 735-4400.Swordplay PlannedFree summer entertainment will be provided by Brooklyn Playworks this year. %u201cThe Phantom Sword%u201d is the latest production, a James F. Engelhardt epic of clashing swords, drawn daggers and flagrant tomfoolery, directed by Phylis Ward Fox with fight direction by Ron Piretti.%u201cThe Phantom Sword%u201d follows the fortunes cf Francisco as he attempts to gain his rightful inheritance from the evil Don Lorenzo and win the hand of the fair Margarita and is packed with dazzling swordplay, lovers and raucous comedy.The show, part of the %u201cBACA Summer Celebration %u201986,%u201d can be seen in Brooklyn Heights at the Pierrepont St. Playground on the Promenade on July 9 at 7:30pm. It will also be performed at Prospect Park on July 12 in The Hollow between the Picnic House and Tennis House at 4pm (bring your own chair or blanket).In-residence performances will be held as well, at which reservations are necessary. There will be shows on July 10 and 11 at 674 Fourth Ave., at 20th St. These performances are at 7:30pm, and, like the others, are free. For information and reservations call 499-2293.Families Get PictureJust opened at the Brooklyn Children%u2019s Museum is a new exhibit, %u201cFamily Portraits: Examining the Family Picture.%u201d The exhibit aims to help kids understand themeaning of family life, addressing the subject from a child%u2019s perspective, and presenting the different aspects of life in human, animal, and plant families.In conjunction with the exhibit, the museum is showing a family of mice in a habitat the kids can observe, offering children a chance to view a living animal family. As youngsters return to the museum, they can see for themselves the changes, over time, in the way a family works, the reproductive rate of the mice, and growth in individuals.There also will be a map of the world with %u201cpeep-holes%u201d in it, allowing kids to peer through at dioramas of human and animal families in countries throughout the world. Another part of the exhibit, %u201cStarting a Family,%u201d shows the similarities between human and animal families.The exhibit will be on display through November 30 at the Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue. Schultz was honored for pushingrenovation of the bandshell that made the series possible. Making the presentation was Deputy Borough President WilliamThompson, Jr.New York Telephone%u2019s Denison Herrield Jr. was at theCelebrate Brooklyn bash to present an oversized mock-up of thecheck from his firm that helped fund the opening program for thethird annual Brooklyn Dance Consortium Marathon.
