It is because of the contributions made by Harris to Murakami%u2019s country, and temple, that the priest wanted to marie the gravesite of the diplomat.%u201cToday, when I see Japan as one the world%u2019s leading ecomonic powers and its astonishing progress, I believe Harris%u2019s assignment 130 years ago was the beginning of Japan%u2019s change. His efforts should be honored in Japanese history,%u201d says Murakami. %u201cJapan is now being requested to make changes of its trade policies and steadily entering into a widely opened economic system. I would like to present my small gift to the grave of Townsend Harris, who wrote such an important page to my temple%u2019s history and to pray for his eternal peace, and express my gratitude and appreciation.%u201dAlthough he was not readily accepted into Japanese culture, or politics, Townsend Harris spent more than six years at the Temple, and when he chose to leave, the Japanese government contacted President lincoln, asking him to ask Harris to stay on in the country.During his six year stay in Japan, Harris was promoted to American Minister to Japan and opened the American Consulate in Tokyo. He signed the convention of Shimoda, and signed the treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan, in 1958.Murakami said he was helped in his quest to donate the stone lantern in Harris%u2019 memory by a variety of people, including those at the City College of the City University of New York. CCNY/CUNY donated the stone epitaph and hosted a luncheon for the dignitaries. The Townsend Harris High School donated cherry and dogwood saplings for the grave site. In addition, the grave is now marked by the stone lantern, with insense, approriate paving slabs and coffer stones, and decorative grey pebbles and round coffer stones, collected on the beaches in Shimoda. Several wreaths were laid at the gravesite, during the dedication, by the U.S. State Department, the Japanese Ambassodor, as well as city officials, both form New York, and Shimoda.%u201cWe sincerely pray that our joint goodwill will comfort the soul of Townsend Harris for his eternal life and serve the continuation of sincere friendship between our two countries for all the future days and years,%u201d says Murakami. Harris%u2019s grave is located at Lot 7615, Sec. 99 of the Green-Wood Cemetery, Fifth Avenue at 25th Street.BROOKLYN HOME VETERINARYSERVICEHousecallsP ark S lo p e , B o e ru m H ill, B ro o k ly n H e ig h ts ,C a rro ll G a rd e n s , C o b b le H ill, P ro s p e c t H e ig h ts ,F o rt G re e n eJEFFREYS.
