GOP Readies For RaceContinued from Page 19and state funding of abortion in debates andin Duean%u2019s own political base. BrooklynHeights and Carroll Gardens.%u201cI%u2019ve already taken a few walks downCourt Street and when I talk about some ofthese issues, I find a lot of people who agreewith my positions,%u201d says Picucci. %u201cShe hasvoted with the Democratic majority in theState Assembly and has not come through onthese issues. I know that Eileen Dugan has astrong base in Carroll Gardens and BrooklynHeights, but if people really listen to herrecord and my stand, I think common sensewill make them vote for me.%u201dWith these issues in mind, Picucci has toturn her attention to strategy and says shethinks she has found a way for a Republicanto make some gains in the mainlyDemocratic district.LaBella, who was removed along with hisD ian e P ic u c c i. (P h o e n ix /T a y lo r P h o to )Democratic District Leader running mateJeffrey Golkin from the party primary ballotfor technical problems with their nominatingpetitions, was running with the support ofsome disenfranchised Italian Democrats whowould like to see Dugan removed from office. After the primary, Picucci made contactwith some of them and says she is hoping thatshe will be able to gain some of their supportin the election. With only 32 election districtsin Bay Ridge, she is hoping that she can takesome of the vote from the Italians living atthe lower end of Court Street. Picucci saysshe has not written Brooklyn Heights off, butdoes not feel the historically liberalneighborhood will be one of her best communities.%u201cI am working from my strengths and feelthat even though I am from Bay Ridge, Ihave a lot in common with some of the peoplein Carroll Gardens and other parts of SouthBrooklyn,%u201d she says.Picucci also began to build name familiarity with the voters early. Unlike mostBrooklyn Republicans, this second-gradeschool teacher from P.S. 186 in Bensonhurst, began to publicly talk about her candidacy inthe spring, sending out information andphotographs to constituents and the mediaknowing that the upcoming political .battlewould be tough. She is also drawing on the visibility that theonly two Republican-elected officials fromBrooklyn, Slope/Sunset Park/Bay RidgeState Senator Chris Mega and BensonhurstAssemblvmember Amaldo Ferraro, can provide.Democrats from the 52nd AssemblyDistrict say that the Republicans are not asstrong in Bay Ridge as they once were. Theysay that the popularity of Sal Albanese, theBay Ridge/Dyker Beach City Concilmember, has diffused much of theRepublican%u2019s support. Democrats are alsoglad that a popular governor like MarioCuomo is at the top of the ticket and are looking for his votes to help their local effort aswell. To Picucci, however, these prospects poselittle threat. %u201cAlbanese is just a very popularfigure with the Italian community down hereand he has tremendous visibility. EileenDugan does not,%u201d she says. %u201cI think that apopular U.S. Senator like A1 D%u2019Amato willalso balance the state ballot out with aRepublican at the top.%u201d%u201cI%u2019m worried, but I made a commitment tomyself and then to the Republican Party andI%u2019m going to carry it out,%u201d she adds.Sister Story Is SlantedContinued from Page 18issue, shouldn%u2019t it be obliged to consider andtake a position on all others? That is not tosay that the board shouldn%u2019t act as a forum. And it does. Over the years individuals andgroups have solicited support for a widevariety of issues. The Community Boarddidn%u2019t necessarily approve or disapprovethese appeals but it offered an opportunityfor special interest groups to address a largecommunity audience. It is unfortunate thatCommunity Session comes late in the Agenda(perhaps it should be changed) but I dobelieve that most people who come to speakare cognizant of that fact.Secondly, one of the goals of the Sister CityProject is to link schools and hospitals inCB#6 with similar institutions in Nicaragua, yet they did not approach the Board ofEducation or the Health and Hospital Corporation, both of which are in a better position to set policy than a Community Board. While Manhattan%u2019s Board #3 voted to supportthe project (and I believe they acted incorrectly) the speaker from that board admittedit was purely symbolic and in no way involved their operations. It would seem to me that it would be moreappropriate if this issue were brought to thefloor of the City Council. The Mayor and theCouncilmembers are elected by a majority ofvoters and presumably their positions reflectthe views of their constituents. CommunityBoard #6 has not %u201cconsituents,%u201d a term thatis commonly defined as a %u201cresident in adistrict represented by an elected officer.%u201dAs an appointed body, it is however representative of the community which means it includes a wide range of views from ultraconservative to ultra-liberal. So it is undoubtedly true that some members may havevoted %u201cno%u201d because the July 19th marchersdid not sport an American Flag. Others whovoted %u201cno%u201d had more complicated reasons. The tenor of the article did not reflect thisdistinction.Regardless of how this was reported in thePhoenix, the whole incident was upsetting tothose of us who believe in the value of theSister City Project but who disagree withCommunity Board involvement and themethods used to approach the board. %u2014Selma Abramowitz, Amity Street.'illlfc'I I P -American Optomefnc AssociationS T U A R T A .
