With an early 7am start to Monday of Week 4, the Year 6 students headed off on their
camp to Sovereign Hill. After a long day of travelling, the students arrived at thier dorms
ready for a fun week. Day 1 was spent learning
about the history of the
Eureka Stockade in Ballarat,
with students using digital
tablets at the Eureka Centre
to investigate key people
involved in the battle, and
their roles. Here they also got
to see the real Eureka flag!
Back at Sovereign Hill the
students explored how candy
and gold bars were created
during this time period,
learned the story of the
Stockade, and attended the
Aura Night Experience.
Day 2 began at the Sovereign
Hill Education Centre,
participating in a session
called ‘Living in the Past’.
Students interacted with
1850s household artefacts.
They attempted ‘olden days’
ten-pin bowling, tried thier
hand at candle-making,
and visited the Brown & Co
Confectionary Shop. Students
also toured the Red Hill Mine,
where they learned about the
conditions miners of the Gold
Rush had to work in.
On their final full day,
students revisted the
Education Centre to learn
more about the Eureka
Stockade. They dressed up
as important people from
the Eureka Rebellion, and
retold the events. They also
spent time at the Diggings
panning for gold. The experts
at Sovereign Hill taught
the correct technique, with
everyone finding at least one
speck of gold to contribute to
the class collection. Students
ended the day watching
a theatrical performance
called ‘Pantomime’, being
treated to a magic show, and
a tour of the stage.
