First Annual Comvntion 11

this slight token of respect and esteem for your kindly interest and

                 work of love.
( Mr. Puchta then presented to Mr. \Y. M. Pattison, of
                 Cleveland, a loving cup). (Applause.)
                      M r. P a t t is o x : When Mr. Puchta commenced his remarks
I thought our worthy Secretary was entitled to all the commenda
tion he was paying him, little suspecting it was intended for me.
The work I did for the Association was a pleasure, and I am
free to say if I had the time to give to it I would like nothing
better than to serve the Association without remuneration'of any
kind. I have a deep interest in the work, and if at any time I
can devote my attention to its success I shall be glad to do so.
Gentlemen, I thank you for this very pleasing remembrance.
                  (Applause).
                      M r. P u c h t a : Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:
While we are on this line, I also wish to make a few remarks to
                 another gentleman.
It took your Executive Committee, as I said before, four
months to find that man. We needed some one who was fitted
for the work; we needed some one whose acquaintance was such
and who commanded such respect and esteem among the trade
that he might go to them and present to them the objects and in
tents of this Association. After four months of diligent search
your Executive Committee had the pleasure of finding that gen
tleman. The gentleman I refer to is Mr. J. H. Drury (applause),
a gentleman who came to us to act in the capacity of Secretary,
stating at the time that he could and would serve us only for one
                 year.
I want to say the connection I have had with such Associa
tions as this—and when I say this I speak in behalf of the entire
Executive Committee— that Mr. Drury’s energy and his work
have been untiring in the interest of this Association. Like
everything that is new, much preliminary work had to be done,
but there has never been a time when he has been called upon that
he has not performed his duty faithfully and well, and called for
more to> do. Your Executive Committee, in recognition of that
service, takes great pleasure, Mr. Drury, in presenting you this
loving cup as a slight token of its esteem and affection, and as
