AI Technology to Detect Legionella

In a groundbreaking development for the region, Dubai Central Laboratory, affiliated with
Dubai Municipality, has implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can detect
Legionella pulmonary bacteria. Legionella is a type of bacteria that causes acute respiratory
infections, and this new method is accurate, sustainable, and able to identify live colonies of
the bacteria.

The technology not only provides accurate results but also quantifies the bacterial counts to a
99 percent accuracy. This means that it can quickly and reliably determine the concentration
of bacteria in a specimen. As a result, the process is completed faster since it requires fewer
laboratory supplies. Eng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory
Department, expressed the municipality’s commitment to developing digital infrastructure
for its laboratories and equipping them with cutting-edge systems that enhance the overall

effectiveness of Dubai’s health and safety system.
