EAD collects 2,000+ tonnes of bottles
under return scheme

The Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi (EAD) has picked up more than 2,000 tonnes
of used bottles since it started the Bottle Return Plan in 2023. This plan helps
people give back their empty bottles instead of throwing them away.

In the year 2024, EAD and a company called Sparklo helped collect 23 million used
items like plastic bottles and drink cans. This plan is part of Abu Dhabi’s idea to stop
the use of plastic that is used only once.
EAD worked with shops like ADNOC, Lulu, and Carrefour and placed more than 100
special machines across Abu Dhabi. These machines, called Sparklomats, take
empty bottles and cans from people. This makes it easy for everyone to return and
recycle.
Out of the 23 million items collected this year, there were 544,000 kg of plastic and
18,000 kg of aluminium. This saved the air from more than 3.5 million kg of bad gas
(CO₂) that harms the earth. One machine even took in over 8,500 items in one day,
