Dawoud Al Hajri, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said: “Our main objective to
revitalise the historic municipal street is to breathe new life into the traditional markets
and landmarks of Dubai, while also enhancing the tourist experience through innovative
approaches.
“This involves enriching the area’s visual appeal with heritage-inspired elements that
capture its unique identity, integrating recreational amenities, and creating pedestrian-
friendly spaces.”
Here’s what you need to know about the updated Old Municipal Street project.
Which area has been revamped?
From the Ras area to the Gold Market, the entire area has been given a remodel.
So what’s really changed?
According to Emirates News Agency, the municipality carried out a comprehensive
overhaul, including paving the street, installing a new gate, enhancing lighting and
integrating heritage elements.
The street now also has traditional seating areas and heritage-inspired umbrellas.
Where does the Old Municipal Street lead?
The Old Municipal Street links to various heritage markets that overlook the banks of
the Dubai Creek. These markets – including the Gold Souq, Dates Souq, Perfume
Souq, Al Ras, and Spice Souq – are tourist destinations that reflect Dubai’s history.
Headed down to Deira? You are just in time for the brightly lit Ramadan Souq pop-
up. It’s where you can buy everything you need to be Ramadan ready.
The market, which is on until Saturday March 9, is situated at the Grand Souq in Deira
and is open from 10am to 10pm.
