HIMA's Smart Safety Test Revolutionizes BASF's Zhanjiang Project

                                                        2025-03-28

        Introduction

BASF’s largest new construction project in China, the Zhanjiang Verbund Site Project
(ZVSP), required significant personnel and time investment for its safety tests,
including Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Integration Factory Acceptance Tests
(IFAT), and loop tests. To optimize these efforts, BASF turned to HIMA's Smart Safety
Test solution, which is an integral part of SILworX®, HIMA’s advanced engineering,
diagnostics, and testing tool. This solution enables flexible, automated safety test
processes throughout the lifecycle of the safety system.

The Need for Automation in Safety Testing
Initially, FAT and IFAT for the first segments of the plant were carried out manually.
However, after this traditional approach, it became clear that a more efficient method
was required to meet the project's ambitious goals. One major challenge was testing the
complex start and stop sequences involved. With HIMA's Smart Safety Test, these tests
became fully automated, ensuring that all static functions and sequences were tested
automatically. Furthermore, test evidence was automatically generated and documented,
        streamlining the entire process.

The implementation of this innovative solution allowed BASF to meet the high-ranking
objectives of the Zhanjiang Verbund Site Project (ZVSP) while maintaining safety
standards at the highest level. By closely collaborating with HIMA engineers, BASF
developed a new concept for testing and verifying safety functions across the entire
        project.

Benefits of the Smart Safety Test Solution

By automating the testing process with the Smart Safety Test solution, HIMA was able to deliver substantial time and cost savings for BASF. The
automated tests not only improved test quality but also enhanced the accuracy of individual tests. This approach led to the detection and resolution
of small deficiencies during the testing process, speeding up the FAT and IFAT phases.

Moreover, the Smart Safety Test reduced the amount of documentation required, as the tests were fully compliant with the specifications. Manual
test reports were no longer needed, easing the documentation burden and improving efficiency. BASF was highly satisfied with the project quality
and the speed of delivery, marking a significant milestone in their efforts to streamline the testing process.

        Conclusion

The successful collaboration between HIMA and BASF for the Zhanjiang Verbund Site Project (ZVSP) is a prime example of how the
integration of Smart Safety Test technology can revolutionize safety testing in complex industrial projects. With a focus on automation, cost
reduction, and improved test quality, HIMA continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting clients in simplifying the complexity of
functional safety. As the project progresses, both HIMA and BASF are exploring opportunities to apply the Smart Safety Test during
upcoming loop tests and automatic proof testing during plant operations.
