Emirati women’s empowerment: A steadfast approach rooted in national
vision
Emirati women continue to play a pivotal role in the UAE’s development journey, establishing themselves as key contributors across all sectors, including
the judiciary. On the occasion of Emirati Women’s Day, H.E. Judge Dr. Ebtisam Ali Al Bedwawi, Director General of the Dubai Judicial Institute, reflected
on the progress made under the visionary guidance of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation.
This year’s theme, “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years,” underscores Her Highness’s enduring commitment to placing women’s empowerment at the
core of national priorities. Through the General Women’s Union, strategic initiatives have been launched to increase women’s participation in
development, foster leadership and innovation, and promote active political and economic engagement.
These efforts have strengthened Emirati women’s presence in government, judiciary, entrepreneurship, and critical fields such as diplomacy, space,
military, and police. Emirati Women’s Day thus stands not only as a celebration but also as a testament to the UAE’s visionary leadership, which has
paved the way for equal contributions from both men and women in shaping the nation’s future.
Judge Dr. Al Bedwawi highlighted her own journey as the first female judge in Dubai courts, appointed under a decree by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin
Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. She recalled taking her judicial oath before His Highness as a
pivotal moment in her career. Today, as Director General of the Dubai Judicial Institute, appointed by H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al
Maktoum, she continues to advance women’s participation in the legal field.
At the Dubai Judicial Institute, initiatives are underway to expand female participation in training programs, engage women judges as trainers, and
integrate talented women into leadership roles. “The journey of Emirati women in the judiciary has evolved from participation to leadership,” said Dr. Al
Bedwawi, noting that this progress is built on determination, institutional support, and the vision of the nation’s leadership.
She emphasized that Emirati women are no longer just participants but pioneers and role models, carrying forward the values of authenticity and
innovation. As the UAE celebrates Emirati Women’s Day, their achievements stand as an inspiration, shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for
generations to come.
