A company with more than 40 per cent share of the total sales in its relevant market must notify the
regulators. This is according to new guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Economy as part of the
recently implemented Regulation of Competition federal law. According to authorities, this is to
ensure a fair market and prevent monopoly in the country.
“This is an important step because of the maturity of our market,” said Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh,
Undersecretary of the Ministry at a media roundtable.

“When investors enter any market, they need a good legislation to protect their businesses. So the
competition law is part of the protection for fair competition. We believe in the open, free
market, but without a fair competition, it will not be one . Otherwise, you will see a monopoly in the
market which will have a big impact on new suppliers, investments and facilities.”
