2/25/25, 5:09 PM UAE: No price hike allowed for 9 basic food products; officials inspect supermarkets
On December 2024, the Ministry of Economy said retailers cannot
increase prices of nine basic consumer goods without prior approval,
in order to protect consumers and enhance competition.
It added that there would be a minimum of six months between two
consecutive increases in prices of basic commodities from 2025.
The new policy asked retailers to clearly display prices of
commodities.
The holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin in the UAE on
March 1, 2025.
Consumer spending in the UAE spikes during Ramadan as citizens
and residents host large gatherings in the month of giving, inviting
their friends and relatives. Retailers report a double-digit increase in
basic consumer items during Ramadan.
Al Marri added that his visit is aimed at “ensuring the successful
implementation of the new pricing policy, enabling sound business
practices, enhancing market oversight, and supporting the provision
of services or goods according to the highest quality standards for
citizens and residents".
The minister also listened to the opinions of shoppers during the tour
about the stability of commodity prices at the outlets.
Al Marri stressed partnerships and enhanced communication
between the Ministry and the departments of economic development
in the country and the relevant government agencies to “prevent any
manipulation of the prices of goods and products".
The authority said consumers are partners in the monitoring process
through interaction with the regulatory authorities, and there must be
continuous communication with the ministry through its channels to
submit complaints or report commercial practices that harm
consumer protection.
